IEEE & IBM Trainings

The BI Analysts training was aimed at training the members on BI Analytics using the Cognos Software. Mr. Munyao, the trainer, is a certified IBM Big Data instructor with a specialty in BI. The training attracted a total of 54 trainees from different capacities: 49 IEEE Moi University Students Branch members of which 3 were lecturers and 5 students from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
During this training, participants were inducted into the IBM Skills Academy whose aim is to bridge the gap between the university and the industry market that are beneficial to both students and lecturers. This hands on approach ensured that everyone who attended the training was well prepared for the Explorer Award and the Mastery Award tests. All members passed the Explorer Award and were able take the Mastery Award exam. The mastery award was impressively done with a pass rate of 89%. The event closing ceremony was held on the last day after five days of training.

In attendance was the Associate Dean of the School of Engineering Moi University, Prof. Kibii and Mr. John Matogo, the IBM East Africa University Relations Lead. Mr. Matogo applauded the effort made in organizing the training and highlighted some  important resources and opportunities availed by IBM that IEEE student members and also University staff could use to expand  their skill-set. These included Digital Nation Africa which bridges the gap between the job one desires and the skills required.
Prof. Kibii also promised to work with Mr. Matogo to establish an IBM Center of Excellence in Moi University.

Application Security Engineering

The members were trained to become application security engineers using the IBM AppScan Standard software. The trainer was Mr. Munyiri – Certified IBM Instructor in Web Application Security. The training was also held in Moi University on 9th to 13th April.  The event was officially opened by the Dean School of Engineering Moi University, Prof. Eng. Simiyu S. Sitati.
Following the previous successful event, this time the training attracted 62 trainees from different schools in the university and neighboring institution, the University of Eldoret. It is worth noting that the Head of Department Electrical and Communication Department School of Engineering was one of the trainees for both trainings. Through the trainings, the branch significantly grew its membership with 10 non IEEE students becoming members by subscribing to the student membership
